LOWER YOUR UTILITY BILLS IN 3 STEPS

An average Singaporean home uses 30 light bulbs. And each home uses about 10 hours of energy every day. That’s a lot!

According to SP Group, lighting accounts for 25% of the total energy used by Singaporeans.

Here is how you can effectively bring down energy costs in your next bill.

1. Understand your home space.

How much lighting do you need exactly?

You can easily determine this by assessing your home space. Whether you live in a condo, HDB, or bungalow, you can figure out yourself the number of light bulbs per room. Does a 25-square feet study room really need 4 ceiling lights and 2 lamps for 4 hours? Save energy by using only what’s essential.

2. Choose the right light bulb.

Are you using the right type of bulb? There are 3 types of light bulbs sold for home usage.

Incandescent – These traditional bulbs produce light by heating a metal wire called a filament to a high temperature until it glows. Incandescent bulbs are much less efficient; they convert less than 5% of the energy into visible light and the remaining energy is converted into heat.

Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) – This bulb uses a tube which is curved or folded to fit into a compact space including a minute electronic ballast at the lamp base. Fluorescent bulbs produce light when the gas inside is heated. CFLs are more expensive than an incandescent lamp, but can last eight to fifteen times longer as it only uses one-fifth to one-third its electric power.

Light-Emitting Diode (LED) – LED light bulbs have a solid state semi-conductor that produces light when the electrons move in a positive to negative pattern. Considered superior of them all are LED lamps. They have a longer lifespan (up to 50,000 hours) and electrical efficiency that are several times greater than incandescent and fluorescent lamps. They are cost-efficient too!

3. Get the right LED.

So you are opting for LED? Excellent choice!

To find the LED that works for you, look out for 2 things: Lumens and Kelvins. The light intensity of LED light bulbs is measured in Lumens. The higher the lumen, the brighter it is. Kelvin is the colour of light based on the Kelvin Colour Temperature Scale. You can choose from cool white to warm yellow light.
